For those with the Oshkosh Truck chassis, the following information from my Oshkosh Truck manual might be enlightening.

The model (example) given is V-917-4

The V is the model series.

The first digit (9) is the nominal front axle rating in thousands of pounds: 9,000#

The next two digits (17) are for the nominal rear axle rating in thousands of pounds: 17,000#

The last digit (4) is the arrangement (whatever that refers to).

The Chassis Vehicle Identification Number is stamped in the left-hand frame rail just behind the left front wheel.

The final manufacturer, who adds any additional equipment to the vehicle, provides the GAWR and GVWR certification plate.
