Refrigerator: Dometic NDR1492 Door Hinge Repair

By Barry Beam 10/26/09

I have a Dometic NDR1492 refrigerator in my 2003 U320.

Recently I found my bottom refer side door hinge was broken.

After checking my parts list manual I could not find a part for it.

I called Dometic and they said the hinge is part of the door and I would have to replace the door.

I could not get a replacement door because the refer is not made anymore.

I called a dozen RV salvage yards with no luck.

I called Dometic and asked if there is anything else I could do.

They mentioned if the hinge is not broker to much that they have a Hinge Repair Kit Part Number 3307896.005 REFRIGERATOR HINGE REPAIR KIT (Beige) and 3307910.004 REFRIGERATOR HINGE REPAIR KIT (Black)

I ordered it and I had too much plastic broken off for it to work.

Finally a friend suggested making a repair with “Plastic Body Filler” (Bondo).

So we proceeded to do just that and below is how we did it.

It worked perfectly.

I would suggest everyone to check there refer hinges to see if they are part of the whole door. If so I would install the “Refer Door Hinge Repair Kit” before it breaks.

Replacing the Refer would have been an expensive proposition as they do not make this model anymore and there is none made that fit this box hole. So extensive carpentry work is needed which would mean losing my storage underneath the refer to fit the new model. The Vent cover in the back would have to be relocated because the burner is now too low and cannot vent properly. Or they can run large PVC pipes through the bay and thru the bottom of the bay to vent. Either option I did not like.

Bottom Refer side Hinge Broken
Door off for a better view.
Now I see there is no replaceable part.
This is the Hinge Repair Kit. There is no plastic left to support this hinge so it would not work.
Decided to try some “Plastic Body Filler”
Using tape & a bit of wood
Masked off the area to create a mold
Plastic Body Filler
Mixing the 2 part mixture
Filling in the Hinge area
Let it harden for 30 minutes
Remove the tape and Wood
File to Shape the Filler
Add Hinge Repair Kit
Drill Mounting Hole & insert Ferrell
Mount door on Hinge
Works perfectly. I will smooth it out a little
